This is Gray whale #49 "Patch". Patch was first seen in 1991 making him one of the first gray whales seen in the Puget Sound since the whaling days. He is a part of a group of gray whales that come into the Puget Sound to feed in the Spring time. Patch got his number from researchers and his nick name from that big white birth mark on his back. Gray whales are the only bottom feeding whale in the world, mainly eating ghost shrimp when in the Puget Sound.
